2010-03-27 Rhosilli on the Ibex

Got blown out mid afternoon but only for a bout an hour. Then got me Ibex out. Was joined by a few other paragliders and some speedwing doods.

Comments :: Unexpectedly nice flying at Milk in the bowl, although the wind was off to the west, almost a bit north of west at times. We were there by 8.30am and flew until lunchtime. By far the best bit was seeing John Morgan get signed off for his CP with some very good strong wind ground handling, launches and top landings.

Comments :: Nice day! Some flying in the morning then strong conditions as forecast in the middle of the day which prevented flying for me as a LAT person but continued at 2.30pm when it became less gusty. Lots of flying had by other TVHGC members and CB posse including some XCs... and lots of other members seen up on Rybury.

Comments :: Sometimes unexpected days can be the best. Arrived at about 2pm to find about 30 cars parked at Rybury and a gaggle of pods hanging over the hill itself and Wallis big earsing in on Milk. It looked too strong but I waited. After listening to Pete W's tales of hours of flying earlier at Westbury I took advantage of Ken and Wallis departure (usually a bad sign!) to park up the top of Milk. Finally the wind dropped enough for a posse to take to the air and eventually I did too. Being a genius I had managed to leave my gloves at home so only did a couple of short flights but it was very pleasant, if not that thermic: about 250ft ATO max. A few red ribbons took to the air as well, as the conditions dropped off a bit more: although this meant that the Milk 'wave' effect we'd seen earlier wasn't so pronounced. Good to see so many new faces: Rybury had done a good job of removing most of the XC hounds so the skies were not too packed. Really nice to have three consecutive weekends (Malverns/Combe/Milk) of flying in March - lets hope it lasts!!

Comments :: A truly superb day! Arrived at about 10.30 and lightish conditions gradually improved to give lots of lift as the day progressed. Very reliable thermals over the eastern end and the copse in front got me lift to cloudbase at 3,500ft (along with quite few others.)Nearly went XC but I think I am just not ambitious enough and far too lazy! Great to see lots of familiar faces and I hope this the start of a good season. Left at 17:00 with over 3 hours of solid flying under my belt and still lots of gliders in the air.

Comments :: Was expecting more high pressure mediocraty, so much so that I willingly traipsed miles to a kiddies fete in the morning. The smaller ridge to the West of the trees was kicking off well, but the sky was very cloudy for earlier gaggles. Finally high and with a narrow channel of sun downwind, but all on my lonesome, I punted off. Tricky and cloudy until Popham; More sun, but long, late shadows thereafter. But the sunny bits just kept working, and finally over the South downs, it was very gently buoyant - a bit convergent, but not really a sea breeze front. Landed short of the Chichester ATZ. Cold but happy, and public transport done me good, as did my upgraded Seeyou software which kept me out of (airspace) trouble.

Comments :: Forecast looked good for an XC, so made the 5 hour round trip for a first visit to Leckhampton. Parked in the wrong car park. Broke my drinking tube in the car door. Completely overcast. Got my glider out and the wind became too light. Dog peed on my glider. Owner dragged the peeing dog across my glider. Got home to find 70km had been done elsewhere. Epic.

Comments :: Finally got to use my Malverns Sticker... Launched at 11am and got hoiked straight up to 1000' ATO. Lift pretty much everywhere in front of the ridge. The difficult part was finding sink in order to lose height and defrost. There was a strong inversion at about 2800' though, so most people stayed on the ridge. Epic conditions (apart from the inversion) - similar to flying abroad.

Comments :: Tiny little hill only two miles from home, next easterly is 50 plus miles away, lots of hopping around and a few reasonable small flights. not as much wind as forecast although few good gusts for sure. Spring thermals were small and not easy to use, almost got away twice, was fun anyway and about a hours air time I wouldn't have got otherwise.
