27 / 02 / 2008 :: Ruddlers West

Name :: Fiona Burgess
Email :: _at_
Date :: 27 / 02 / 2008
Direction :: South West
Comments :: I was lucky to be allowed to join 2 students & Lee Bligh (instructor) at ParAvion's perfect private hill site just round the corner from Rybury. Plenty of soaring about in variable lift and some small thermals, plus a lot of top and slope landings, finally a nice little TTB. We had a good view of the 5 wings at Rybury also having fun. The best bit was knowing that Cathy and Tracy were signed off CP at the end - very well done, and thanks Lee!!

Comments :: Got to the hill early and waited for the wind to come on which it did around 10.30-11.00. Conditions steadily improved with some nice thermals coming through in the afternoon. Conditions were cyclic and sometimes strong on launch but nothing worrying with scratching sessions in between:) Great looking sky, nice day all in. Left around 3.00 with pilots still flying.

Comments :: Took off with my brother Ben on PPG's. Flew over Mum's house then to Butser and Droxford and back to Denmead. Large inversion, very cold but memorable flight. Good to be in the air again - calm and light conditions...

Name :: Robert Ager
Email :: robertager _at_ ash-studios.co.uk
Date :: 18 / 02 / 2008
Direction :: East
Comments :: Met Kay S at about midday where the wind was steadily increasing from just enough to keep the canopy above your head to a good lifty breeze. About 7 wings on the hill, but most of the time only about 5 in the air. Lovely day with beautiful views, although very cold out of the sun, where the frost never melted in the shadows.The first time I have flown Mercury and I found it a nice straightforward ridge with enough challenges to keep your mind occupied, whilst always being aware of that barbed wire fence! To finish of a very enjoyable day, there was one of the most magnificent sunsets I have ever seen.

Comments :: Cold. Strong. Plenty of up. Loads of gliders up using all the ridge. Loads of height gain in the dynamic stuff plus some weak thermals out over the valley. A surprisingly excellent day out.

Comments :: Went down south with Rob Ginger and looks like it was a good call in the end, flyable all day long, even thermals for a while but suspect the inversion was sat right on top of the hill as howling on take off but not at all strong in the air and the thermals didn't get much higher than the hill top! lovely sunny day though if a bit cold, flew our socks off and then got the tandem out when it got more manageable on take off, which put a smile on Marta's face!

Comments :: Was there with everyone else having a great time freezing my fingers off. Flew 7k up to the 'quarry' and back but it was getting too late for the full ridge run. Big thanks to Jamie in towing my old banger out of the mud in the 'car park'. Most exciting moment of the day was watching it slide down the hill with brakes on and nobody inside...

Comments :: Up in Wales with climbing club, walked up to lower takeoff with tandem and first time passenger. Wind at this height was very light due to inversion. Decided to make most of day so walked all way to top at 3000'. Well worth it as we were rewarded with an hours soaring around the tops of the Glyders with stunning views.

Direction :: South East
Comments :: Had a call from Fiona at about 14:00 to say it was scratchable at Mere. Followed lots of Sunday drivers on my way to the hill. Arrived just in time to see everyone packing up. Decided to ground handle for a while. Evetually rewarded with a very light lift band. Soared that on my own to a mighty 10 feet above the hill for about 10-15 minutes. It then picked up further so that it was lovely soaring conditions for another 20-30 mins. Great fun. Thanks for the call Fi!

Comments :: Was flyable from about 8.30 in the morning but the heavy inversion made the air a little snotty. Once that lifted consistant and smooth conditions were available the whole day. Left around 5.00 pm and still flyable! I think we counted a total of 7-10 in the air but mainly only 4/5 of us flying at any one point. Great Day

Comments :: Massive crowd and their dogs at Mere, (special mention to Fi and Alexander for their four legged friends). Too crowded for a low airtimer like me, so headed out to Long Knoll. Had a couple of flights and over an hour soaring whilst watching the melee at the Rifle range for amusement. Long Knoll is a spineback covered in hidden gorse with a barbed wire fence across the top. It is steep and requires a walk up and there is no parking, and side landing only, but it was magic today. Like Sugar - an unappreciated site!

Comments :: Lovely day at Mere. Arrived at mid day to a busy site with lots of pilots scratching. Conditions steadily improved, but still very busy. At one point at least 16 paragliders and a hangglider. Still nice flying and a lovely day.

Comments :: Out with Gerrit and Bryan Regan at potential new site. Best thermic conditions so far this year. Tricky site with lots of trees and hawthorn bushes around, but once up in steady lift, the potential of the hill becomes apparent. Beautiful day with plenty to keep us occupied!

Name :: Al Wilson
Email :: al _at_ mrog.co.uk
Date :: 06 / 02 / 2008
Direction :: North West
Comments :: Forecast looked too westerly for Combe so reluctantly headed for Westbury. Turned out to be a good choice - it was flyable for hours, starting strong and ending up light, with lots of small gentle thermals. Max height 700ft ATO, but interesting flying and perfect for blowing away the cobwebs. Anyone fly at Combe?

Comments :: Sneaked out of work to join Rob Ginger for a lovely float up and down the Chinnor ridge in the sun shine, first bit of real thermaling of the year but to windy to stay in them for long. Wind dropped off after a while and we both top landed and back in work half a hour later. What a nice afternoon:-)

Comments :: I guess everybody was at Milk again!!!! Just two flyers at Sugar enjoyed a full day's soaring. It was a tad windy most of the day, but some careful precise soaring low down made for an interesting day. Wind did ease down enough for top launches about mid afternoon for an hour. Plenty of action to watch below with hikers and trail bikers waving as we swooped about above there heads. Great winter flying.
